The Art of Batik – Paint, Dye, and Design on Fabric

Experience the timeless art of Malaysian Batik — a craft that transforms fabric into storytelling.

Unlike other Batik traditions, Malaysian Batik is celebrated for its bold, vibrant, and universally appealing designs. It leans into abstract, geometric, and floral motifs, steering away from figurative or mystical symbols seen in other regions. The result is an artform that feels joyful, accessible, and deeply connected to nature and flow.

In this hands-on workshop, you’ll be working on a pre-stretched fabric canvas — making it easy, structured, and ready to display or frame once complete. You’ll be guided in choosing from a variety of traditional Malaysian Batik designs, ranging from flowing florals to playful geometric patterns, or you can let your creativity run free.

In this workshop, you’ll learn:

  • How to apply fabric dyes in a watercolour painting style unique to Malaysian Batik
Techniques to blend, layer, and control color flow on fabric
  • Batik design principles — focusing on balance, negative space, and rhythm through floral, wave, and abstract patterns
  • The cultural significance of Malaysian Batik’s modern yet heritage-rooted style — bold, expressive, and connected to the environment

What makes Malaysian Batik special?
Vibrant and abstract designs: More universal, geometric, and nature-inspired
Free-flow brush painting techniques: Less rigid, more intuitive, playful, and meditative
Bright, uplifting color palettes: Moving away from earthy tones into rich blues, reds, yellows, and greens that pop

You’ll leave with a beautiful, handmade textile art piece — ready to be framed, displayed, or gifted — and a deep appreciation for this Southeast Asian craft with a modern twist.
